Pink Striped Headboard (home craft)

Create this pink striped headboard, or use your own colors. That's the best part, it's a DIY craft, so you can choose your own style. Ribbon adds to this colorful piece.

Materials:

• STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam:
  • Sheets, 36" x 12" x 1", six
• Coordinating grosgrain ribbon, 1" x 1-2/3 yds.
• Coordinating fabrics, 45" wide: stripe, 1 yd.; gingham, 1/2 yd.
• Quilt batting
• Serrated knife or dental floss
• Candle stub or paraffin
• Round wooden toothpicks, 44
• U-pins
• Pencil
• Yardstick or ruler
• Scissors
• Straight pins
• Low-temp glue gun and glue sticks
• Thick, white craft glue
• Iron and ironing board
• Saw tooth hangers with nails, four

Instructions: 

1. Apply hot glue to ends of 12 toothpicks and insert evenly spaced along one 36" edge of first foam sheet, pushing picks halfway into foam. Apply glue to pick ends and one 36" edge of second foam sheet. Align foam edges and push together firmly to make a single 24" x 36" sheet.
    
2. Repeat Step 1 to create second 24" x 36" foam sheet.
    
3. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin. Measure and mark one 8" x 24" rectangle on each remaining foam sheet and cut out; reserve foam scraps for future use. Or, cut the foam with dental floss: Stand the sheet on its edge, and hold a 20" length of dental floss along the scored line, positioning one hand at the bottom of the board and the other at the top; draw the dental floss down through the foam sheet along the scored line.
    
4. Join rectangles to large sheets created in Steps 1 and 2 along 24" edges, using toothpicks and glue; finished sheets should measure 24" x 44". For added strength, dip ends of u-pins into glue and insert into each foam sheet along all seams.
    
5. Staggering seams to strengthen headboard, glue foam sheets together to create 2"-thick base; pin seams to secure.
    
6. Cut 24" x 44" piece from quilt batting and glue to front of foam.
    
7. Iron fabrics. To recreate look shown, cut two 20" x 36" strips from striped fabric and one 15" x 36" strip from gingham. Place vertical gingham strip right side down on work surface. Center headboard over strip and glue fabric ends to back of foam; pin to secure until glue dries.
    
8. Cover exposed areas of headboard with striped fabric strips in same way, overlapping gingham just slightly and wrapping excess fabric to back of foam; fold corners neatly and glue to secure. Pin fabrics to secure until glue dries.
    
9. Cut ribbon in half. Beginning 1" from top back edge of headboard, glue and pin ribbon along fabric seams and around to back bottom edge.
    
10. Glue four saw tooth hangers, evenly spaced and level, across top back of headboard. Dip nail ends into glue and insert through hanger ends into foam. Let dry completely before hanging.
